There are a few standard rules that every student should observe at all times when it comes to behavior in the classroom. You are sharing your classroom with several other people who are just as important as you. Don't try to make others feel embarrassed.
Don't make fun of others, or roll your eyes, or make faces when they are speaking. If you must sneeze or cough, don't do it on another student.
Turn away and use a tissue. Say "excuse me. If someone is brave enough to ask a questiondon't laugh or make fun of them. Keep tissues and other supplies in your desk so you'll have one when you need it! Don't become a constant borrower. Messy workspaces can become distractions. Try to clean your own space often, so your clutter doesn't interfere with the classroom workflow. Make sure you have a space for storing supplies that must be replenished.
This way, you will know when your supplies are running low, and you won't have to borrow. Maintain a homework checklist and bring your finished homework and projects to class with you on the due date. Arriving late to class is bad for you and it is bad for other students. When you walk in late, you interrupt the work that has begun. Learn to be punctual. You also risk the possibility of getting on the teacher's nerves.
This is never good. Respect the work and the words of your group members. If you don't like an idea, be polite. Never say "that's dumb," or anything that would embarrass a classmate. If you really don't like an idea, you can explain why without being rude.
Speak to fellow group members in a low voice. Don't speak loud enough for other groups to hear. Everybody likes to have fun, but there is a time and a place for fun. Don't try to have fun at the expense of others, and don't try to have fun at inappropriate times. The classroom can be fun, but not if your fun involves rudeness. You normally wouldn't expect to encounter such a profound statement in an R-rated film, especially a spy thriller chock-full of a colorful range of violence, sexual content and perverse language.
However, this one statement calls into question—at least in my young adult mind—the importance of manners and the role of etiquette in today's society.
First of all, what is etiquette? Etiquette, in the modern sense, is a code of behavior that outlines the conduct acceptable within a society, social class and group, according to the cultural norms of the age. Basically, etiquette is the observance of good manners and the outward manifestation of respect for the feelings of other people. It's all about not being a selfish jerk which can be hard for, let's say, your typical New York City subway passenger.
When you shake someone's hand as a greeting, hold open a door for a mother pushing a stroller, bring a gift of wine to your friend's dinner party, or step to the side when an elderly person with a cane walks down the street, you exhibit remarkable decorum in accordance with good etiquette.
All such actions may seem ordinary or unnecessary, but these little actions demonstrate a natural and careful consideration of the feelings and well-being of other human beings. Life, at least in my experience, is a mix of good and bad occurrences, so the simple act of caring can provide a tremendous relief for your average man or woman. Also, the attainment of good manners is not so arduous an endeavor.
Etiquette is not an art requiring a lifetime of study; in fact, its principles are simple, as their use only requires care, sensitivity and sagacity. You don't have to be of "high birth" or "superior breeding" to be a modern gentleman or gentlewoman. If you behave in a way that invites good opinion, smiling faces, respect and polite speech, you are already a practitioner of fine etiquette.
As I write this article, I make sure to follow good manners. If I submitted my work late without notifying my editor then I would be ignoring the reality that she probably has other responsibilities to manage. The proper etiquette in the workplace, as well as in the home, is to be considerate of the feelings, effort and time everyone invests in their designated role. It boils down to being thoughtful of our actions. If we all practice good manners, then daily life will be all the more delightful.
There is nobody worse than a dishonest and selfish human being, so strive to be like agent Harry Hart—minus the violent tendencies of a secret agent. Welcome back. If one is physically assaulted, it will permit him to retaliate with reasonable violence. It does this because the burglar and the assailant have broken quite definite commands of the law. But no legal system can legislate against bad manners or could sanction the use of violence against something which it does not itself recognize as a legally punishable offence. The law protects one against violent retaliation.
But there is no penalty to pay if you are boorish and haughty.
You will be only termed as a bad mannered person. There is no allowance for moral and intellectual damages. This does not mean damages are negligible. The pain of a kick on the chin soon passes away but the pain of a wound to our self respect or vanity may poison a whole day.
For there are few things more catching than bad temper and bad manners. We infect the world with our ill humours. Bad humours probably do more to poison the stream of general life than all the crimes in the calendar.
The law cannot become guardian of our private manners. No court could administer a law which governed our social civilization, our speech, the tilt of our eye brows and all our moods and manners. While it is true that there is no law that compels us to be good mannered, there is a social practice much older and much more sacred than any law which enjoins US to be civil.
